Eagles coming tonight to Pryor
The Fraternal Order of Eagles is coming to Pryor and looking for local charter members in the 111-year-old charitable organization.
The first meeting of interested men and women for the aery and auxiliary will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at American Legion Post 182.
Pryor’s Roy McClellan and Van McClellan (918-519-1097) requested that the Eagles try to form a charter club in Pryor. The closest are in Bartlesville and Muskogee.
Founded in 1898 and responsible for starting “Mother’s Day” and beginning the campaign that resulted in “Social Security,” the Eagles now have more than 2,000 clubs in the U.S. and Canada, with more than 1 million members.
Seven former U.S. presidents have been members, and the organization has raised and donated millions of dollars every year to fight cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes and help underprivileged youth.
“The greatest good the FOE does is at the community level, getting involved in local and area causes that directly benefit their neighbors and positively affect the quality of life on Main Street,” said Ralph Goodwin, state coordinator (918-344-1391).
The FOE slogan is “People Helping People.”
Bob Hope was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
“Eagles are my kind of people,” Hope said. “Nobody gives as much as they do.”
